Goodbye to….

After releasing the Honeycomb Conjecture Collection last week, I discontinued the Reversible Honeycomb Cowl and the Love It or Leaf It Cowl.

Both the Reversible Honeycomb and the Love It or Leaf It Cowls were designed shortly after I started reversible knitting. These patterns have been very popular and many cowls have been knit from them. I now call the technique used in these patterns Original Fusion Knitting.

A few years later I created Modified Fusion Knitting. It creates the same fabric as the Original Fusion Knitting but it is much easier because all the cables are worked with their front side facing forward. Most cable work that we see in other patterns is worked this way and it is much more intuitive.

I released the New Leaf Cowl last summer and it is almost identical the Love it or Leaf it Cowl. At the time, I did not discontinue the Love It or Leaf It Cowl because it was a good, workable pattern. I also believe that the skills learned by cabling with the wrong side facing forward was valuable (this kind of cabling opens up more colour work possibilities & I plan to design using this technique in the future). But every time someone purchased this pattern, my heart sank and I wished that they bought the New Leaf instead.

By discontinuing the original cowl patterns, I hope that knitters, new to my designs, will have a better first experience.

I have NOT discontinued the Reversible Honeycomb Scarf or the Love It or Leaf It Wrap despite their motifs being the same as the newer versions. The newer patterns are significantly easier but have a fringe & I know a lot of people don’t like this. Instead of discontinuing the pattern, I have sent an update to previous purchasers explaining that a better option is available.

I hope purchasers of the original patterns understand why I have discontinued the patterns. I still love those designs and don’t mind cabling on the reverse side of a cable. I am very curious which versions knitters will choose.

When I release a pattern, it shows a technique in the way I know to do it best at that time. I expect that my techniques will continue to evolve and I will have a similar situation again in the future. Please let me know if you have suggestions on how to better handle this in the future.
