Both Fission and Fusion Knitting use slipped stitches to create colourwork cabled designs on both side of the fabric.
Fission Knitting is worked with yarns held in a marl. The marl is broken apart to work the cables. The resultant fabric has a marled middle layer and an overlaid design on each side. It is possible to create a different cabled design on each side of the fabric.
Fusion Knitting is worked over 2 colour garter stitch. The design on each side of the same.

Class Format
The workshop consists of two 3-hour & one 2 hour zoom sessions
What you’ll learn:
First Session
- Learn the fundamentals of Fission Knitting, a revolutionary colourwork technique that creates a different cabled motif on each side of the fabric.
- Start the fundamentals of Fusion Knitting to create a mirrored cabled motif on each side of the fabric
Second Session
- Compete the Fusion Knitting skills
- Learn the charting and written notation to effectively document area share your reversible designs
- Learn how I think about the Fission/Fusion knit fabric & create new designs, giving you the tools and inspiration to develop your own unique projects.
- Additional topics include: fixing mistakes, choosing yarn & colours, managing yarn, working with 4 or 6 colours, factors affecting drape, hiding imperfect reversibility
Optional Homework between sessions 2 & 3:
- Create 1 or 2 small one sided designs that you will put together to form a reversible fabric in Fusion or Fission Knitting
Third Session
- We will knit, chart, and create written instructions for your reversible design
Additional materials:
In addition to class notes, you may download my reversible Stitchmastery library & a dictionary of my stitches. Stitchmastery use is not a requirement and the stitches will described in the dictionary. I will be using Stitchmastery in the classes for efficiency.
